This 2-week course is designed for Juniors and Seniors who are engaged in the college enrollment process, or for students (Sophomore or higher) who would like to familiarize themselves with what to expect. It will centralize the development and mastery of writing abilities, editing skills, and creating a viable college application essay for high school students.
The first week of the course will provide general instruction regarding the Common Application essay structure. We will cover basic grammatical skills to augment the clarity, quality, and succinctness of students’ work. Students will learn skills to effectively self-edit while also building relationships with their peers to peer-review. This will encourage socio-emotional skills and bolster collaboration. The second week of this course will provide information regarding supplemental essays that students will have to provide for individual schools. Students will learn how to research various universities that are aligned with their interests and how to foster a network within those universities.
Hours: There will be a total of four classes per week and each class will be approximately 3 hours long. Thus, this equates to 12 instructional hours per week for 24 instructional hours in total. Each class provides one-two hours of homework for students to apply what they have learned in class. The combined instructional and applicational hours provide the students in this course with a total of 48 hours of preparation for the college application and essay process.
